Thematic and lexico-semantic groupings of French verbs and verbal phraseological units in youth argot

Introduction. This study examines French youth argot as a distinct social dialect, focusing on the structural and semantic organization of verbs and verbal phraseological units. The research aims to analyze both lexico-semantic groups (defined as semantic classes sharing core semes) and thematic groups (units connected through situational or topical relations), proposing a tripartite division of the latter into core, intermediate, and peripheral zones. Materials and Methods. The analysis draws on a corpus of 770+ French youth argotic verbs and verbal phraseological units collected through continuous and selective sampling. Methodologically, the study combines descriptive linguistics with statistical analysis — including chi-square testing — to objectively classify linguistic units and categorize lexico-semantic groups within thematic groups.
Results. The analysis identified 10 thematic groups of French youth argot comprising 71 lexico- semantic groups. These thematic groups were further categorized into three distinct zones based on their compositional density: nuclear, medium, and peripheral. This stratification reflects relative importance of different conceptual domains within contemporary French youth argot.
Conclusions. The developed methodology proves transferable to studying argot systems across social groups and languages. Furthermore, the approach enables valuable comparative and typological investigations of specialized lexical and phraseological systems in both related and unrelated languages. Such comparative studies would facilitate the identification of shared, partially shared, and distinct conceptual domains within the linguistic consciousness of different speech communities.
