Abstract

Introduction. This study, situated at the intersection of linguacultural studies and cognitive linguistics, addresses the reconstruction of national linguistic worldviews — a key issue in modern anthropocentric linguistics. The article identifies how the ‘clothing’ code is represented in Russian and Chuvash linguistic worldviews through a comparative semantic analysis of the lexical category ‘clothing details’. Particular attention is paid to the lexemes ‘collar’ (Russian: воротник; Chuvash: cуха), ‘pocket’ (Russian: карман; Chuvash: кĕсье), ‘hem’ (Russina: подол; Chuvash: аркă), and ‘sleeve’ (Russian: рукав; Chuvash: cанă).

Materials and Methods. The research material includes language examples selected from Russian and Chuvash explanatory, phraseological, and dialect dictionaries, as well as contexts drawn from folklore collections. The study employed continuous sampling of language examples, analysis of dictionary definitions, conceptual and contextual analyses, and the comparative method.

Results. The lexical category ‘clothing details’ is widely represented in both Russian and Chuvash. Interlingual relations between the lexemes studied are based on the principle of intersection. The analysis identified both common features and specific national features in how this category is represented in the two languages. In both languages, the lexeme ‘pocket’ actualizes the general meaning of the presence/absence of money and associated themes — theft, bribery, and poverty; the lexeme ‘hem’ is gender-marked and semantically correlates with the female gender. A national-specific feature of the Russian linguistic worldview is that the lexemes ‘collar’ (Russian: ворот, воротник) and ‘neck’ (Russian: шея) have a similar associative–figurative organization. A prominent national-specific feature of Chuvash linguoculture is the conceptual opposition ‘woman’s hem — man’s hand’.

Conclusions. The findings may support further study of how the ‘clothing’ code is represented across various cultures and languages.
