Psychological and pedagogical methods for developing value orientations in students within tense social environments

Introduction. Ensuring safety is paramount in a tense social environment. Particular attention must be paid to vulnerable groups — those who, due to age or social circumstances, cannot effectively withstand arising threats. Students constitute one such group. Value orientations can serve as a personal resource for them, supporting psychological safety in both normal and tense social environments. This study aims to identify value orientations among students in social environments with varying levels of tension and to substantiate psychological and pedagogical support methods for the development of value orientations among students from the new regions of Russia.
Materials and Methods. The study involved 1,034 students from the new regions of Russia (558 female and 476 male) and 513 students from St Petersburg (437 female and 76 male). The mean age was 19.7 years. Value orientations were studied using an index system developed by the Federal Institute for Education Quality Assessment, adapted for university and vocational students.
Results. The study identifies value orientations of male and female students from the new regions of Russia. Safe behavior is significantly more important for male students from the new regions, while their counterparts in St Petersburg place a higher value on work and education. Female students from the new regions place higher value on family and career. The study proposes methods for developing the least expressed values. The authors established both general methods, which can be used to develop any value orientation, and specific methods for developing the values of a healthy lifestyle, safe behavior, work and education, and scientific knowledge.
Conclusions. Future research may focus on developing specific content for psychological and pedagogical support for the development of students’ value orientations, accounting for regional differences in student value orientations.
