Moritz Ilyich Mikhelson: A teacher, a public figure, and a lexicographer (on the 200th anniversary of his birth)

Introduction. Moritz Ilyich Mikhelson (1825–1908) was a Russian educator, translator, public figure, linguist, and lexicographer. His life’s work was a two-volume dictionary of Russian phraseology (1902–1903). Mikhelson was the one who conceptualized phraseology as a distinct linguistic phenomenon, which is reflected in the dictionary’s title Russian Thought and Speech. He viewed phraseology as the ‘physiognomy of language’, embodied in the phraseological thesaurus of the Russian language.
Materials and Methods. An analysis of Mikhelson’s lexicographic material shows that phraseology was a fragment of the Russian linguistic worldview of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The dictionary includes phraseological units in the traditional sense, as well as apt expressions, original grammatical constructions, paroemias, and riddles, accompanied by explanatory notes, illustrations, references, and comparisons.
Results. The presentation of material in the dictionary follows an associative-referential principle, which demonstrates a carefully conceived lexicographic methodology. The dictionary is based on the principle of the self-sufficiency of a dictionary unit, and the frequent absence of interpretation is compensated by illustrative material that appears in the index included in the appendix. The statement of a parallel fact, both Russian and foreign, often renders traditional interpretation redundant, highlighting the self-sufficiency of the structural and semantic model. Mikhelson showed that Russian phraseology is impossible without foreign language material as its background. A significant part of the dictionary consists of vivid colloquial expressions reflecting the phraseological picture of the Russian world.
Conclusions. The reviewers’ accusations of a ‘lack of system’ in fact point to the strengths of this monumental lexicographic project and reveal its deeper coherence. The four editions of the dictionary form a single tetralogy, representing the first attempt at a Russian phraseological thesaurus.
