Dysarthria and apraxia: A view on the issue

The article focuses on topical issues of the conceptual and terminological apparatus of speech therapy in Russia. It analyzes existing perspectives on the mechanisms and the clinical presentation of motor speech disorders of organic central origin in Russian and foreign (English-speaking) literature. The analysis is based on the scientifically grounded correlation between etiopathogenetic and symptomatological approaches to speech disorder research. The authors describe discrepancies in understanding the mechanisms of occurrence of these disorders and highlight the differences between ‘cortical dysarthria’, ‘acquired apraxia of speech’ (in adults) and ‘childhood apraxia of speech’.
